Background

When we first meet Comfort she is happily married and a devout Catholic, she thrives on danger despite being a solid and dependable character, but whose opinions will be tested to the limit.

We first see her in S16 E1, dressed in her leather biker gear, to attend a shout to a pub, in which a stag night has got out of hand. Comfort shows her strong character, and is unamused by the petty squabbling of the groom and his transsexual stripper. In S16 E4, Comfort is on the road with Nikki, and is the perfect balance for Nikki’s headstrong character. They go to a call to a building collapse, Nikki is unnerved with Comfort’s way of dealing with dying patients. They also deal with a regular schizophrenic man and a vicar dying of cancer, who confesses to Comfort that he has abused a teenage girl. Comfort tells Patrick not to try too hard to save him, which she later regrets, and returns to CRASH later when he dies to pay her respects. Comfort advises Nikki on the pressures of the job, and persuades her to carry on with her career. She later goes home and surprises us by crying infront of a weepy film with her husband Rob. In S16 E6, Comforts turns up to Josh’ hearing for support, and offers Fin advice on how to handle the situation. They are all shocked when Josh announces his resignation. In S16 E9, Comfort and Nikki come to A&E with a stabbing victim, it is only when cleaning up, that Comfort realises that she has also been stabbed in the thigh. Patrick tells Comfort she has to be tested for hepatitis, as she missed her last immunisation. She anxiously waits four hours for the results and advises Josh in the duration. Boss, Jeff McGuire, threatens her with a disciplinary for not getting her immunisation, which enrages Comfort, as she was too busy to. Her tests come back negative, and she breaks down in the car with her husband, Rob. In S16 E10, Comfort and the police are sent to a call out, after an elderly lady in A&E tells Chloe that ‘Billy’ head butted her and she took her revenge by tying him up in a shed – when they get to the shed they realise ‘Billy’ is a billy goat. In S16 E16, Comfort meets up with schizophrenic Al again, when he, and Nikki are called to a pub where he has locked himself in the toilets. While there, a coach of fans crashes into the pub, and they deal with the casualties. In S16 E20, Chloe is on observation with Comfort and Nikki – while she awaits police questioning. She confides in Comfort and Nikki into her relationship with Nikki – and at first Comfort wants to turn her in, but they are called to another shout before she can. They go to a house, where three drugged up men have serious cuts after a dog fight. The gang leader pushes the paramedics around and urges them to not take them to hospital – angrily Comfort punches him, before the police finally arrive. Comfort decides, after Chloe’s help, not to turn her in. After receiving a plane ticket from Jason, Comfort and Nikki drive her to the airport and intercept the police. In S16 E21, Nikki confides in Comfort regarding a lump she has found on Jack – he is not happy that she has told her. In S16 E22 Comfort and Fin pick up Eddie, who is coming in for a transplant. Tanya, who he is having an affair with, wishes to come with him, but he tells her to return to her family. Tanya gives Comfort her phone number and a photograph of them both. In the ambulance, Eddie’s condition deteriorates and he suffers a heart attack. He refuses treatment, but Patrick tells him they have to cancel off his transplant operation anyway and if he refuses treatment he will die, Eddie reluctantly agrees to treatment. Comfort, upset at the situation, calls Tanya to break the news. In S16 E25, Comfort’s husband is caught tailgating an ambulance and is shouted at by Fin. Fin is annoyed when he mentions that Comfort has called him a ‘hot head’. After previously being called out to a derelict house, where squatter Gemma has injured her head but refuses to go to hospital, paramedics are later called out to the house when it is set on fire. Gemma’s sister, Sal, is taken in with serious burns, in an ambulance with another injured man, Roy. It is only after Comfort and Josh set off in the ambulance, does Fin realise Roy was the arsonist and he tries to warn them on their radio. In the ambulance, Roy gets distressed and throws paraffin over Comfort, threatening to flick his lighter on – Comfort pushes him out the ambulance. Fin tells Comfort how worried he was for her and as they cuddle – Comfort backs off when Fin tries to make a move, but before she can say anything more her husband Rob turns up to see how she is. In S16 E28, Patrick has been involved in an RTA, bikers Fin and Comfort are first on scene and try to assess the casualties. Fin decides to drive the tanker away from danger, and is deflated when Comfort doesn’t congratulate him on his bravery and the fire brigade tell him he took a dangerous risk. Later, after Patrick is saved from the wreckage, Comfort and Fin make up with a hug. In S16 E29, Comfort and Fin attend Patrick’s wake, she tells him she didn’t appreciate his untactful comments during they day when she wanted to attend Patrick’s funeral. He apologises and they have a lingering kiss – before her husband Rob shows up. Next episode, Comfort is, at first, frosty with Fin after their previous kiss. On their way to a shout, youths push a buggy infront of their ambulance and throw red paint at their window. As they go to investigate, the youths steal the ambulance, and eventually make off with the defibrillator. Back at the station, Jeff McGuire is not impressed with their actions and threatens them with a disciplinary. While repairing a puncture, a small girl, Sophie, asks Fin and Comfort to save her rabbit, Ben, who had been shocked with a defibrillator. Fin manages to save the rabbit, and she then shows them the flat where the youths live. Fin gives chase to them, but falls down some steps – they then corner Comfort and threaten to shock her with the defibrillator – Fin manages to get up and save her in time. They then kiss. Back at the station, cleaning their ambulance, they jokingly spray eachother with water and Fin suggests they better get out of their wet clothes. In the locker room, they kiss again. In S16 E31, Comfort visits a church to confess her sins, after sleeping with Fin. With Josh off sick, she is surprised to find herself working with Fin that shift and finds it awkward. Later on in the shift, Fin tells her he can’t stop thinking about her and they share another kiss. In S16 E32, Comfort tells Colette about her fling with Fin, and later tells Fin that she wants to end their affair, but he makes it hard for her to say no and they kiss outside. Next episode, he tries to persuade her to leave her husband. She says it’s not that easy. In S16 E34, he again pushes Comfort into telling her husband, Rob, about their affair. Rob comes to see at work and wants to forgive her and make amends on their marriage. He says he will meet her after work. Meanwhile, Fin, on his day off also comes to visit her. She tells him to back off a bit, and decide to meet for lunch. Nikki and Comfort then visit an angina patient, Kevin, who has collapsed at home. His wife, Pam, is hoping to get a priest to give him his last rights before he dies. Comfort tries to grant her wish, by getting him to the hospital where a priest will be waiting for him, but he is already dead. The family doctor outside the house confirms his death and Pam is angry at Comfort for deceiving her. Fin, who is out jogging, falls down a hole, missing his lunch appointment with Comfort, but the man he is stuck into a hole advises him to see her after work and fight for her love. Fin rushes to meet Comfort at work – where Rob has also arrived. They both tell Comfort how they feel and she is told to choose – she decides Fin. Rob is heartbroken. Thinking she sees one of the children who died at the crash site crossing the road infront of the ambulance, she slams on the brakes and causes a crash. Later, she is deeply affected by the grief of a widow. Eventually, she admits to Josh that her experiences at the crash are affecting her work and he signs her off. But Fin is upset that Comfort went to Josh for help instead of coming to him. In S18 E7, Fin is furious with Comfort when she puts herself in danger on her first day back on the job. In S18 E11, on her day off, Comfort meets Eve. She is a spontaneous girl, out for a good time, which Comfort relishes. Impulsively, Eve leads her into all sorts of trouble as they leave a cafe without paying and end up in a bar pretending to be hookers. The boatyard is live with electricity and, if she touches the boy, they will both die. With the horror of the train crash still haunting her, Comfort does not want history to repeat itself and begs Fin to talk her through the procedure. As he does so, she confesses her innermost fears to him and he admits that he let her down. Comfort sees Ric, the little boy from the crash, throughout the situation and finally cries out to God for help. Fin, thinking she has been injured, comes to her rescue and is amazed to find her unaffected by the electricity. When she, Fin and the boy survive, Comfort credits God for the ‘miracle’ and walks away feeling purged. It is a turning-point for her and she resigns in order to heal herself.
