I have to say, in all the time i have spent watching Casualty, I have never noticed him staring at the ceiling...

My dad comments about the eye contact thing virtually every time he watches Casualty and Charlie is in it (which is pretty rare these days - both my dad watching Casualty and Charlie being in it). He's convinced Derek has all his lines fed to him from a cue card just slightly to the left or right of him.
