part 2: How did it end up like this?
He took her outside, looked her straight in the eye and before she had the chance to say anything, he started to speak. He let it all out and told her how he wanted to be there. He told her how much he wanted to be a part of their baby’s life. He told her how much he wanted to do things properly. He finally finished speaking and she just stood there, looking at him. She wasn’t in the mood for arguing so she turned around and walked away. As she walked she looked back at him and that’s when it happened… the sound of brakes screeching, the sound of her head hitting the floor, the sound of him screaming her name.
He, followed by a few nurses, ran over to her lifeless body. They took her into the hospital and straight into theatre. He was told he wasn’t allowed to operate on her so he went and sat in the staff room. Once in there, he collapsed onto the sofa and many memories of the time when he was last in here came flooding back to him. He waited there as minutes passed by. He couldn’t take his mind off her or their baby. All he could do was wait and hope for the best.
The surgeon who had been operating on her had now finished and had come to find him to give him the bad news; she’d lost the baby. He didn’t know what to say. He was gutted. It was as though is second chance to be a father had unfairly been taken from him. What would he tell her? She would be heart broken.
He slowly made his way up to Intensive Care, thinking about what he was going to say to her. He saw her lying there and it brought tears to his eyes. He walked through the doors and sat down beside her, taking her hand in his. After about five minutes she started to come round. He knew that this was it, he had to tell her. So he did, he told her exactly what happened. At first she didn’t believe him and tried reassuring herself but then it hit her, she HAD lost the baby. Tears flooded her eyes. Tears she thought she would never cry. He tried to comfort her but she didn’t want him anywhere near her, not after this.
She told him to leave. It really hurt her to send him away but whenever she looked at him, it brought their child to mind. She watched him leave as she let tears cascade down her face. She couldn’t believe this was happening to her. She wished she hadn’t walked away from Sam when she did, as this would probably never have happened. What had she done to deserve this?
He had now made is way to the hospital entrance. He couldn’t take his eyes off of the place where she had been hit. His mind replayed that scene over and over. He desperately wanted to turn the clocks back so that he could make sure this would never have happened. If only life were that simple. His thoughts drifted onto her. He knew how hard this would be for her but he really wished that she wouldn’t push him away.
He was tired after such a long day so he thought it would be best if he went home to get some sleep. There was just one phrase passing through his head as he made his way over to his car… “How did it end up like this?”
