Actor Dan Rymer is fondly remembered for playing popular staff nurse Dillon Cahill in CASUALTY between Series 16 and 17. However since leaving the show, Dan has been working hard on various projects including his new business company ‘Fresh Face Photography’ as well as settling into married life and becoming a proud father. Dan recently caught up with holby.tv to talk about his role in CASUALTY and his current work…

It’s been three years since you worked on CASUALTY, do you miss working on the show? What are your fondest memories from being in CASUALTY?

I really enjoyed working on CASUALTY and made some great friends that I will hopefully stay in touch with forever. This said life moves on and I believe you should never live in the past. I’ve done some amazing things since I left, including helping to bring a son into the world and although my work life is also very busy, these are the things that really matter.

What were your favourite storylines involving your character Dillon?

I loved the storyline with the downs syndrome girl. I still get people mention this storyline to this day and I think it was a really strong and heart renching episode.

Your last storyline involved Dillon being shot, however fans never found out if he lived or died. Are you able to shed light on what happened to him?

I guess the audience was supposed to be left guessing? I never found out but I’d like to think that he recovered and went on to continue his career elsewhere, maybe even complete his training as a doctor. Who knows, he may even turn up in Holby again one day!

Do you still keep in touch with any of the cast from CASUALTY?

As I said before, I have made some life long friends at CASUALTY. My closest friends are Lee Warburton and Christine Stephen-Daly and I see them as often as I can. I also catch up with Zita Sattar, Chris Colquhoun and Martina Laird every now and again.

Do you ever watch CASUALTY now?

I don’t often get the chance to watch the show now but it feels strange on the odd occasion that I have caught it.

Can you still remember your first scene on CASUALTY? Were you nervous on your first day on Set?

I was very nervous, I had just finished the night before, performing in Chicago so I was very tired and, of course, very nervous.

Did being on CASUALTY increase your medical knowledge in any way? Would you be a good person to have around in an emergency?

I don’t know if you caught it but there was a story in the national newspapers a while back, where I helped a lady who had a nasty accident in Oxford Street. She had fallen off the back of a London Bus and hit the ground hard with her head, which triggered a seizure. I was able to keep her in a stable condition until the paramedics arrived.

You’re about to guest appear on an episode of ‘Doctors’ (30/11) – what kind of character do you play? What storyline are you involved in?

I think the character’s called Simon Ross, but don’t quote me as it was a while ago and I might be wrong. He is a young guy in a gay relationship and he and his partner are trying to have a baby with a surrogate mother. He is in a feud with his mother who is completely against his life choices.

You’ve recently started up a new business venture ‘Fresh Face’ – can you tell us more about this?

Fresh Face Photography is my new photographic business. Since leaving CASUALTY I have trained as a photographer and set up a state of the art studio in Surrey. We take funky, fun, modern pictures of families and display them on high quality canvas perspex and other stylish formats. I was inspired by the many photo shoots I had on CASUALTY and wanted to offer the same high standard of photographs to the general public, but at prices they could afford. The business is due to launch next week and we have a fantastic website, that I am very proud of, at

www.fresh-face.co.uk. Log on to check it out and find out loads more about us.

You’re also an Artistic Director for a school in Shoreham – what does your role involve?

I am artistic director of Stonelands School in Hove, Sussex. The school is a full time vocational school, training children in all aspects of dance, drama and theatre. I spend as much time there as I can and love working with the children and giving them the benefit of some of my experience. Sometimes I teach dance or drama and I’m involved in advising the school in all their major artistic productions, including helping to rehearse the children for various performances.

A while ago you did a guest presenting stint on Songs of Praise. Would you consider presenting again?

Not really, as you will realise my life’s pretty full at the moment. But I would never count it out if the right thing came along.

You met your partner Barbara whilst filming CASUALTY – are you enjoying married life?

I’m absolutely loving being married and highly recommend it. Barbara is absolutely fantastic and we have a wonderful son together, Lucas, who will be 2 in February.

In 2002 you run a marathon in Norway with Lee Warburton. Did you enjoy it and have you done any other runs since then?

I did enjoy the marathon, it was a real laugh. However, we didn’t train as much as we should have and I found it a real challenge. Now I can say, I’ve done it, I don’t think I’d rush to do another – it’s really hard work !!

What was the last…
a) book you read –
The family way – Tony Parsons
b) film you watched – CRASH
c) CD you bought – Daniel Powter
