Holby City spoilers follow.

Holby City star Nic Jackman has spoken out following Cameron Dunn's exit tonight (March 23) – and revealed if we'll see him again.

Tuesday's scenes saw Nic's villainous alter-ego Cameron get his long-awaited comeuppance when he was arrested by the police.

Cameron's increasingly tangled web had begun to unravel in recent weeks, but the game was well and truly over tonight when his pregnant girlfriend Nicky forced the truth out of him.

The turning point for Nicky came when Cameron was coldly uninterested in an update about their unborn child – being too preoccupied with attempting to flee.

Finally accepting that Chloe's claims about Cameron were true, Nicky was horrified to learn the extent of his crimes since 2019.

Discussing Cameron's exit, Nic – who plays the character – said to Digital Spy: "I think it's right that the police took him away. Justice will be served and that's important with this kind of storyline.

"I knew a few weeks in advance that it would be going this way, and I didn't always. Sometimes I would just get the script and go, 'Oh wow, he does that today!' But, with this, I knew for a while and that was the ending I was happy with. He is going to go to prison."

While Cameron's actions may have had fans screaming at their screens, Nic admitted that he's "loved" playing the serial killer – praising Holby for breaking the trend when it came to villainising his character.

"When I first came into the show, Cameron was so different and everyone liked him," Nic commented. "But then he turned into a monster. I did have some idea as there were key moments – like when he let Evan die: he just stepped back and didn't help him.

"He knew what he was doing. That was the big shift and ever since then, he went in a darker and darker direction. Bernie dying was massive. That changed him and I don't think he ever recovered. He's a tragic character but he became irredeemable.

"I've loved playing him. It was really brave for a show like Holby to have a character who was this dark for this long. It's quite unusual to be given that. I was really lucky, it was really meaty.

"I just got stuck in and I've loved playing the villain. It's nice now I am able to talk about it. There have been so many secrets I've had to keep for a long time, knowing how dark he goes. I am so glad we can finally have a chat about it!"

But as for whether Cameron is truly evil or mentally unwell, Nic wasn't so sure.

"It's really a really hard question and, in all honesty, I don't know. When you are playing it, you've got to find something human about it and something that justifies his actions. So I think perhaps he is unwell.

"Even at the very end, there is something quite chilling. That final scene, you really see that there is a monster in there, something really evil. It's almost like he is still calculating his next move. I didn't even really know I was playing that. It's weird. When I was watching the episode, I don't remember playing it like that but I saw it. I was drawn in as a viewer. "

When we spoke to Nic, he'd already had a few months' distance from filming his final scenes.

Reflecting on his final day on set, he said: "We film out of order so the final scene I shot was the office scene where Ange basically says to Cameron that she was opening an investigation. That was the last scene I shot.

"It was really nice as I loved working with Dawn [Steele] and it was a nice two-hander scene where it was quite intimate. It was very emotional knowing that was the last scene I would be filming. The police car scene I had shot way before I had shot the majority of my final episode.

"I do miss it though. You miss the people and it's a fantastic job to have. I loved the character and I definitely miss it. I'm still in touch with everyone. There is a WhatsApp group and we all speak in there. It's a really lovely crowd."

Cameron might be gone but he'll certainly never be forgotten, with the aftermath of his exit set to play out over the coming weeks. But does Nic think we'll ever see him in the show again?

"There is scope but for now I think the story has closed in a really good way," he stated. "Justice has been served and he's not going to get away with this. He is going to prison. I am pleased with the way it's closed."

As for what is next for him, Nic was feeling optimistic about the future.

"It's all self-tape now and it's nice to be able to do that from the comfort of your own home and not have to go into town for a meeting, but it's nice meeting new people as well," he said.

"It's exciting now that there are opportunities out there to play another character – hopefully somebody a bit nicer!"

Holby City continues on Tuesday, March 30 on BBC One.
