Fenisha in Casualty

Casualty fans have been left in sobbing wrecks after a double death in the show left the wedding of Athan Hardy (George Rainsford) and his much adored bride Fenisha Khatri in tatters.

Following the terrible train crash, Fenisha passed away while her groom waited for her nearby, while Lev was also a victim in the accident.

Here, Olivia D’Lima speaks to Metro.co.uk about the huge ending for the character and what she thinks the future may hold for poor Ethan.

How did you feel when you found out the ending to Fenisha’s story?

We knew there were several ways the story could go and all I wanted was to make sure that Fenisha got a memorable send-off and that she did! She had such a dramatic time on the show that it would have felt wrong for her to just slink off – she deserved drama until the end. I feel incredibly honoured to have been able to play out this beautiful love story and be part of an unforgettable Casualty season finale.

Is there an element of you disappointed that the door is closed?

Casualty was everything I hoped for and more, and now I get to treasure those gorgeous memories while spreading my wings.

Would you have preferred a happy ending for Fenisha and Ethan?

As a viewer, of course! But the fact that they were finally honest with each other about their feelings was the most important thing for me. And now Fenisha lives on in Bodhi and I’m hoping Ethan will have caught some of Fenisha’s wanderlust and will share that with their son. And some day, the couple will meet again and dance their first dance and be blissfully happy together.

How exciting was it to film such high-octane scenes?

It was so exciting and dramatic! The crew were absolutely incredible, they created such a gorgeous set; all of the mist, blood, beautiful costumes made it perfect. The scenes in the hospital when Fenisha was dying were indescribably difficult, I actually cried throughout every scene – ask anyone who was there! Thankfully they were able to cut around it!

It was such a weird experience; I’ve spent so long feeling like I know Fenisha, I forget I play her sometimes! So, her dying was such a strange thing. Though I knew the time was right, the story itself was so beautifully tragic that I couldn’t help but get emotional.

How do you think viewers will react to the double tragedy? It’s so sad and also such a big twist!

I think the viewers aren’t going to know what’s hit them and I hope it isn’t too scarring because I know TV deaths can really hit you hard – trust me, I’ve been in mourning over some TV deaths before! It’s so tough because Ethan and Fenisha’s happy ending was so near and Lev had finally accepted himself and was starting a new and exciting chapter of his life. I know it will come out of nowhere for them and although it’s heart-breaking, I know it will make for an unforgettable episode.

How do you feel to be the latest one to destroy poor Ethan, albeit not through your character’s fault? The guy should just give up, bless him.

Fenisha isn’t the latest one, she is THE one to Ethan. Ethan should never give up. If you don’t try, how will you ever know? Somehow, he always manages to find a beautiful glimmer of hope and I hope he manages to find that after Fenisha’s passing. At least he knew that she adored him, so much so that she lugged a Dalek halfway across Holby! Don’t ask me how!

Will you continue watching to see how Ethan will grieve for you? How do you think he will cope?

Of course, I’ll have to watch over baby Bodhi and Fenisha’s true love! It will be a huge struggle for Ethan, it breaks my heart to think of how bereft he’ll be! Hopefully Bodhi will inspire him to keep going and remind him that there are still amazing things to live for.

How would you sum up your time on Casualty?

In one word – unforgettable. I’ve learned so much, met incredible people and made memories I can treasure forever! I look back with a huge smile on my face and will always remember that important chapter of my life.

Do you have any projects lined up for the future?

I love variety and the unknown, that’s part of why I love being an actor. I have some exciting things in the works, including writing a comedy series and getting a short film I wrote and starred in onto the festival circuit. I can’t divulge too much detail but I definitely believe that variety is the spice of life.

What would be your ideal role to play to tick off your bucket list?

Since Jasmine has already been taken, I’d have to say Esmeralda in a live-action Hunchback of Notre Dame film! Growing up, I didn’t see many characters on screen who I felt represented me but these two strong, fun, brown women made me feel like I had a place in the industry – even though they were cartoons! Otherwise, a legendary villain similar to Azula from ATLA!

Would you ever do another serial drama? If so which is your fave and who would you play?

Serial Dramas are incredible; knowing the work that goes into them in, I’m in such awe of everyone who works on them. I don’t think they get enough credit. We’ll have to see what the future holds and where life takes me!

Do you have a final (sob!) message for Casualty fans?

Oh my gosh, are you trying to make me cry?! I would just like to thank the fans for their amazing support. Casualty fans are some of the best out there and I’m always overwhelmed to hear that Fenisha’s stories have helped and inspired people. Fenisha will always have a special place in my heart, right next to the Casualty fans who have made me smile when they haven’t even realised!
