S18 E25 (21 Feb 04) : Taking Care by Maurice Bessman & Danny McCahon

Episode Summary

As part of the BBC’s Taking Care season, foster mum Lesley struggles to care for her foster daughter, Charlene, who is extremely defensive and angry and has harmed herself with a broken bottle. Lesley is at her wit’s end and does not know what to do. She feels let down by the systems in place that are meant to help. Abs draws on his own experience and expertise to get through to Charlene and work through her behavioural problems, which stem from a fear of turning out like her alcoholic mother.

Meanwhile, Charlie’s first custody hearing is adjourned when Louis discovers his grandad, Ken, fighting for breath. Ken is rushed into hospital and Dan is granted custody until Ken, on his death bed, asks him to let father and son be together. Dan cannot ignore Ken’s dying wish and drops the case when Louis tells him he wants to stay with Charlie.

Elsewhere, Harry is dismissive of the amount of praise Simon is getting when he returns to the department in a wheelchair. Simon is frustrated that he cannot have a proper conversation with Lara but, when they are finally alone, they kiss. She is confused about her feelings and pulls away, claiming she just wants to be his friend.

Fin tries to build bridges with Comfort and pens her a heartfelt letter. He suggests they go to a relationship counsellor and she agrees.
