2.03 Destination Unknown – 9/12/99

S2 E3 (9 Dec 99) : Destination Unknown by Steve Bennett

Episode Summary

Ray is now the ward’s union rep and asks Jasmine if she wants him to investigate her receiving compensation for her accident on the grounds that if they had had proper security then Jasmine wouldn’t have been stabbed. At first Jasmine is unwilling, but agrees – and agrees to counselling too. Julie and Jasmine move in to nursing halls.

Nick is worried that Meyer wants him off his team because he hasn’t been around as long as everyone else. He tells Meyer how he feels, and Meyer simply tells him to stop being so self-pitying. Meyer says Nick has no idea what poverty is, but he does. Meyer has been trying to receive payment for the operation he did in-flight, and gets a call from his solicitor saying that the airline have agreed to pay. Meyer tells his solicitor to donate it to the British Heart Foundation. Nick overhears this and tells Meyer it is a noble gesture to which Meyer replies that he shouldn’t tell anyone.

A young girl called Ally has cystic fibrosis and is in desperate need of a lung transplant. A donor turns up and they are going to replace her heart and lungs and then give Ally’s healthy heart to a boy called Tommy who has a heart condition and is in desperate need of a new one. However, problems with the donor set of organs means that Meyer suggests that the parents give a lobe of their lung each to save their daughter. They take blood tests from each of them and find that Colin (Ally’s father) doesn’t match Ally. Meyer talks to Ally’s mother, Anne, who confesses that Ally isn’t Colin’s daughter. Anne hasn’t spoken to Ally’s real father, Gary, for years but knows where he lives. She agrees to let them contact him as it may be Ally’s only chance for survival.

Ally’s sister Jess is jealous of the attention, and is talking to Tommy, who would have received Ally’s healthy heart. She finds an empty bed and sits on it reading. Ray and Jasmine come in and Ray tells Jasmine that Nick and [ID 593]Karen[/ID] have gone off together in Nick’s new car. Jasmine informs him that they’ve actually gone to find Ally’s real dad, and Jess overhears this.

Jess goes to talk to Tommy who has been making a list of things he wanted to do before he died, that he hasn’t done. One of them is driving a fast car so Jess goes into an office, takes the keys of Nick’s new car, and Jess asks Tommy to teach her to drive. Later they kiss and Tommy says that kissing someone gorgeous was something else on his list. They go back to the hospital and is sent to intensive care. Nick decides not to contact the police about them stealing his car, as the car is not damaged.

Karen and Nick go to Gary’s house and explain the situation. At first Gary is unwilling to help but Nick gives a speech about having the chance to put things right, to do the right thing – he says not everybody has that chance. Gary agrees to donate a lobe. Meanwhile, Anne tells Colin that Gary is in fact Ally’s father and he is very angry, but Ally is not told who her father really is. The operation goes successfully.

On the pleasure side of life at Holby, they’re having their Christmas party. Julie invites one of the builders, and Karen had invited Dave but he phoned during the day and dumped her. Nick and Karen end up talking once they are drunk. Karen asks Nick if he meant what he said to Gary earlier to which Nick says he genuinely did. They dance together and then kiss. Nick wants to go somewhere more private to carry on but Karen says it was just a kiss and didn’t mean anything. Nick harshly says she got over Dave quickly, and Karen tells him to grow up. She says there’s nothing to talk about and walks away, leaving Nick to shout after her that there obviously is.
