9. Supply and Demand

40.07 [10.07] – 28/2/26

Episode Summary

With the CQC inspection ongoing, pressure continues to mount across Holby ED. Teddy questions Jacob about why he is still pursuing a formal complaint against Ashley, but Jacob remains firm in his decision.

Jacob and Teddy are called to the home of Neil, an obese man who has taken ill. Neil is diabetic and struggling with his mobility, and the fire service are required to help move him safely. He tells Teddy that his health has deteriorated since his mother died, and it becomes clear that grief and isolation have played a significant role in his decline.

Back in the department, Flynn feels the strain as Ceri from the CQC returns to continue her inspection. Dylan checks in with Matty, offering him the option of a different mentor, but Matty says he is happy to finish his rotation with him.

Kim’s health obsession appears to worsen. She feels lightheaded and struggles to concentrate but continues working.

A traffic warden, Debbie, is brought in after being dragged under a car by an angry driver. Meanwhile, Tara arrives with a head injury, accompanied by her overly talkative colleague.

Siobhan receives welcome news from a DI that her attacker has been arrested after someone recognised the e-fit, and his DNA has been found on her uniform. She is relieved that he is off the streets. However, the DI later returns to inform her that the man claims he was a patient she treated that day — suggesting that is how his DNA ended up on her clothing. The development leaves the situation uncertain once again.

Barney offers to support Siobhan through her ordeal, but she insists she is fine and that their focus should remain on getting through the CQC inspection.

With the CQC observing, Kim and Matty decide to work together for the remainder of the shift. Assessing Tara, they determine she requires a lumbar puncture. Kim attempts to guide Matty through the procedure using information on her phone instead of seeking senior support. The procedure goes wrong, and Tara is left paralysed. Flynn is furious that they did not ask for help. Matty reminds him of the way he handled the recent training exercise, admitting he did not feel able to approach him. The residents are devastated by their mistake. Stevie has the difficult task of informing Tara that she will need surgery and warning her that the paralysis may be permanent.

Jodie bonds with Neil, connecting over shared experiences of losing a mother. She gently encourages him to take better care of himself now that he is alone.

Ashley comes into the department to apologise personally to Jacob for arresting Blake. While Jacob accepts the apology, he confirms he will still be proceeding with his complaint.

As Neil is being transferred upstairs, he begins to seize. Jodie calls Dylan, who steps in to manage the emergency. Dylan asks Ceri to assist with a bleed, and she struggles, experiencing a flashback to her time as a medic during COVID.

Following the day’s events — including staffing concerns such as insufficient consultant cover overnight — Ceri informs Flynn that Holby will need to close to major trauma cases at night. The decision shocks the team. Flynn argues it will damage the hospital’s reputation and funding, while Rida questions whether jobs are at risk. With major trauma cases set to be diverted to St James, Flynn fears patient care will suffer and lives could be lost.

Outside the hospital, Flynn confides in Siobhan that he had hoped to fix Holby but feels he has only made things worse. He suggests resigning, but Siobhan calls that a cowardly move and tells him they need him — and that they will fix it together.
