Episode Summary
Ceri Mayland arrives from the CQC to carry out an unannounced inspection of the hospital, putting the entire department on edge. Flynn is especially tense, hoping to leave on time to celebrate his daughter’s birthday.
Jacob and Teddy are dispatched to a mental health call-out. They first encounter Kyle, a teenage boy whose mother, Bryony, is in crisis. As they are told to head to another call instead, Kyle takes a fall down his front steps, and the crew must treat him first. Once inside, Teddy finds Bryony behaving erratically. In an effort to keep her calm, he joins her in baking, gaining her trust.
Dylan reveals to Stevie that he secretly tested Matty’s discarded strep swab for a DNA match. Later, he receives a text confirming that he is a paternal match. The weight of the news hits him hard, and he privately confides in Stevie, telling her the result is a “catastrophe”.
Meanwhile, a man in respiratory arrest is brought into ED, handcuffed to a woman. Dylan instructs Matty to find bolt cutters so the team can treat the man properly.
Teddy’s new girlfriend, PC Ashley Sullivan, is called to the same mental health case. Bryony becomes spooked by Ashley’s arrival and flees. During the chase, Teddy searches for them and finds Ashley stabbed. She is brought back to the ED in serious condition.
Kim treats several children brought in from a nursery by one of the workers— one of whom has swallowed a button battery. When the power fails in radiology, Kim uses a metal detector to try to determine which child swallowed the battery. During the confusion, one of the children, Albie, goes missing. Ceri helps Kim search, and they find him choking. Kim takes him to resus. During the emergency, Dylan mistakenly shouts at Ceri, but later realises she was asking for essential kit to help save the boy. At the end of the shift, Ceri tells Flynn she is triggering a full inspection.
Ashley later wakes in hospital and asks Teddy about calling her his girlfriend. The two agree to make their relationship official.
Elsewhere, Siobhan tells Faith she must inform Iain about her pregnancy before making any final decisions. As tensions rise across the department, Flynn takes full responsibility for the upcoming inspection and tells the team he’s ready to face it. Siobhan offers to stay and finish the paperwork instead of him. Flynn insists she take money for a taxi home, but after he leaves, she leaves the money on the desk. Walking home alone through the dark streets, Siobhan is attacked.
