Episode Summary
With Holby ED no longer designated for major trauma, the evening shift begins unusually quietly. The team try to boost morale with pizzas, though the atmosphere remains strained. Kim and Matty continue to feel the fallout from their recent mistake, and when Kim attempts to make conversation with Nicole in the staff room, Nicole makes it clear she is still angry about the consequences their actions have had for the department.
Flynn confides in Stevie about his fears for the future of the ED. With major trauma cases now diverted to St James, he worries the longer journeys could cost lives and that the department’s funding will suffer. He admits he has already put his own name forward should redundancies become necessary. Rida later questions him about the situation, concerned about what the changes might mean for staff.
Before heading out on a call, Iain shows Indie a baby scan and reveals that he and Faith have decided to co-parent. He also shares the news that the baby is a girl. Soon after, Jan receives a call from a distressed mother, Emma, whose baby has been crushed beneath her car, and Iain and Indie are dispatched. Realising how critical the situation is, Iain pleads with Jan to allow them to bring the baby to Holby rather than the more distant St James. Jan agrees.
While attending counselling, Siobhan receives a call from the DI informing her that her case is being dropped due to lack of evidence. Struggling with the news, she uses the anchoring phrases she has been taught to calm herself.
Back in ED, Matty and Dylan treat Fela, a man with lung cancer who is struggling to breathe. Matty asks Dylan to assist him rather than handling the patient alone. Matty storms of mid-treatement. During the consultation, Fela reveals to Dylan he left his five-year-old son home alone so he could go to work.
Meanwhile, the ambulance carrying the injured baby breaks down in a tunnel after being pushed to it’s limits. Forced to continue on foot, Iain and Indie reach a nearby house where they can treat the child. As Iain prepares to perform a procedure, his confidence falters and he asks Indie to take over. When her attempt fails, Iain regains his composure and successfully completes the life-saving intervention.
Elsewhere, Bryn is brought into ED with a serious head wound. Staff recognise him as a previous patient who had been living with a violent partner, Thomas. Bryn explains he had tried to call an ambulance earlier, but the call had been dismissed as a hoax. During treatment he reveals he injured Thomas in order to escape the abuse. When Jacob later visits the house, he discovers Thomas has died. Bryn is arrested and Jan feels awful about dismissing the attempted emergency call.
Rash treats a woman named Avani who initially appears overly flirtatious. Rida suspects she may be wasting their time and attempts to discharge her, but blood tests reveal elevated markers suggesting she may have suffered a minor heart attack. Avani explains she had actually been trying to set Rash up with her daughter. Feeling guilty for misjudging the situation, Rida later tells Flynn to add her name to the list if redundancies are required.
Stevie confides in Faith that she has been experiencing stabbing stomach pains. Faith urges her to have them checked again despite her recent all-clear, and Stevie reluctantly agrees, though she still appears worried.
During the shift, Iain quietly checks Faith’s blood pressure and is concerned to find it elevated. He tells her he is worried about both her and the baby and doesn’t want anything to go wrong.
Kim continues to struggle physically and emotionally. When Stevie confronts her in the toilets, we can see Kim desperately crying inside one of the cubicles. However, when Kim finally opens the door and Stevie sees her, she insists she is completely fine and returns to work.
Siobhan later shares the news about her case being dropped with Flynn. The staff briefly distract themselves with wheelchair races around the department. When reviewing CCTV to see who won, Siobhan notices her attacker sitting in reception, deliberately staring at the camera in an attempt to intimidate her. She storms to the police station to confront officers but is again met with dismissal.
Dylan later finds Matty and reassures him that mistakes are part of learning, recalling his own early errors as a doctor. Matty admits he became a doctor for his mother and feels he has let her down. Dylan apologises for the part he played in her own career not working out.
Returning to the hospital, Siobhan vents her frustration by trashing her office. When Flynn finds her, she asks if he will help her get revenge on the man who attacked her.
