Episode Summary
On the hottest day of the year, Holby ED is under pressure as new resident doctors Matty and Kim begin their first shift. Dylan is frustrated when Flynn rejects his leave request and tries to assign him mentoring duties.
Matty arrives confident and quickly befriends an elderly patient, Claude, who is struggling with the drinks machine in reception. Kim is more nervous and immediately makes a poor first impression — first assuming Stevie is a man, and repeating that she’s heard Stevie is a “ballbreaker,” unaware she’s speaking to her mentor directly.
The department is soon overwhelmed when guests from a wedding party are admitted following a barn fire. The groom is brought in with severe burns, while the bride, Reenie, has been trampled escaping the blaze. Her daughter, Emily, has an injured arm. Amid the chaos, Matty notices Claude is still waiting but is told to prioritise more urgent cases. Later, he finds Claude collapsed. Despite his attempts at resuscitation, Claude dies, leaving Matty shaken. Dylan offers quiet support.
Kim treats Debbie, a pregnant woman with a dog bite. When Debbie faints, Kim presses the emergency button unnecessarily and is corrected by Stevie. Later, unable to detect the baby’s heartbeat, she presses it again. While Debbie is being scanned, Kim finds her partner, Ollie, unconscious and fitting. This time the emergency call is justified, and Kim suspects scurvy may be the cause.
Kim also treats Bethany, who has severe sunburn. During their conversation, Bethany admits she has previously had skin cancer but continues sunbathing because it helps ease her loneliness. Nicole warns her about the risks. Later, Nicole is seen on a video call with Ngozi, confirming she is alive and well — a moment that quietly reassures Kim.
Tension continues between Faith and Iain, with Faith later admitting to Stevie that Iain is staying with Jacob.
Dylan grows suspicious about Matty after recognising his surname from a former university girlfriend, Sarah Linlaker. When Matty confirms his mother’s name and that she left university after falling pregnant, Dylan and Stevie exchange a knowing look.
By the end of the shift, Kim feels she has found her place in ED and tells Stevie she was made for it. Matty, devastated by Claude’s death, declares he intends to report the hospital to the CQC. Stevie later asks Dylan what he plans to do about possibly being Matty’s father. He admits he doesn’t know.
