S2 E9 (20 Jan 00) : A Life Worth Saving by Al Hunter Ashton

Episode Summary

Meyer sees Danny and Victoria arriving at work together and warns her again that her relationship with Danny could damage her career. Victoria asks Kirstie if she agrees with Meyer and Kirstie says she does. Victoria repeats to Danny what Meyer has told her and tells her that her career is too important to her but that they can still go out now and again.

Kath’s having a party to celebrate her twenty fifth wedding anniversary and Damien asks Ray if he can go with him, but Ray doesn’t want to. Damien asks if they are a couple and Ray says it’s too early in the day to discuss it and Ray leaves to phone his ex-wife. Meanwhile, Kirstie’s father is on Keller Ward after an operation needed because of his excess drinking and he’s asking to see Kirstie.

Karen goes to see Mark who is autistic but is fantastic at chess and has a photographic memory. Karen asks Ray to take him to the canteen but to not let him out of his site. However, Ray does so when he meets his ex-wife Vanessa in the lift. Eventually he finds Mark with Kirstie’s dad and Mark tells Kirstie’s dad to stop drinking. Mark’s full of questions about the operation and challenges Meyer to a game of chess and Meyer agrees, but Mark wins. Mark says they can mend his heart but they can’t sort out his brain and Meyer says that if he survives the operation then in the future his disease could be cured.

Kirstie and Tash are talking about her dad, and Kirstie goes to see him. Kirstie’s angry that he was never there for her and was always out getting drunk. He tells her he’s giving up alcohol and she offers to help him. When she later bends down to kiss him she smells alcohol on his breath and he’s obviously been drinking. Kirstie’s very angry and says his word isn’t enough and that she wants to help him but he needs to help himself.

A neurosurgeon called Cassandra Holdsworth turns up and she obviously has a history with Mike. Mike tells her that him and Rachel have split up. Mike questions her about her condescending attitude towards Jasmine and she calls the nurses “hired help” and says she doesn’t worry about being nice to people. Mike turns her down when she offers him a one-night stand.

Ray’s talking to Vanessa about his sexuality and she says she assumed he knew he was gay and goes with him to meet Kath and the others. Ray tells Damien he needs to take things slowly and Damien agrees.

Danny’s not sure whether Victoria has actually dumped him until she tells him that she has, it was getting too heavy and she just wanted some fun. Danny tells her that he can be fun and Victoria says she’ll pass the word around.

Mark’s gone missing, and Karen finds him on a bench. He still hasn’t decided about the operation, but Karen says she thinks he wants it. He says they’re bullying him into making a decision and Karen say it’s only because they think his life is worth saving. He agrees to have the operation and the pair goes back to Holby together.
