Semi-regular HOLBY CITY actress Susannah York has died, aged 72.

Susannah, who was best known for her role opposite Jane Fonda in the 1969 film ‘They Shoot Horses Don’t They?’ passed away following a long battle with cancer.

Her role in HOLBY CITY was as Trust Executive Helen Grant. She appeared in 9 episodes between Series 5 and 6, and also made two CASUALTY appearances in the same character in 2004. Of her role in the programme, she had said, ‘I don’t think I quite realised I was playing the baddie and I’ve played lots of baddies in my time.

‘I enjoyed doing it but wish I’d played her a bit more bad and with a bit more conviction. I think I was trying to make her a bit more likeable.’

Following her death, the actress’ son Orlando Wells said: ‘She was an absolutely fantastic mother, who was very down to earth.

‘She loved nothing more than cooking a good Sunday roast and sitting around a fire of a winter’s evening. In some sense, she was quite a home girl. Both my sister Sasha and I feel incredibly lucky to have her as a mother.’
