7.37 Rat Race – 28/6/05

Episode Summary

‘Rat Race’ : Diane is back at work, she is shocked to learn of all the changes Connie has made in creating the SuperDarwin ward. Holby is to be a centre of cardiac excellence and Keller ward will now take cardiac patients. Diane’s research position has been abandoned and Connie offers her a new registrar research position. Connie shows Diane into her new office – Ric’s old one. Diane’s new position is based in the laboratory.

Donna has a patient, Vanessa, she is concerned about and asks Diane for help. Vanessa has a severe septic belly button piercing. Diane reminds her that she cannot treat a patient now unless it is an emergency. Later Donna again begs Diane to help treat Vanessa but Diane refuses. Connie and Diane clash over the treatment of a heart patient. Fed up with Connie, Diane calls Ric in Ghana. She wants to treat Donna’s patient and tells Connie who says that the new Cardio centre does not deal with non-emergency general surgery and the patient should be transferred to St James. Diane decides to go ahead and operate on the girl anyway but Donna lets it slip to Connie by accident. Connie reprimands Diane saying that she should not have defied her. Diane does not back down, saying she saved the girls life. Later, Owen tries to convince Diane that her research position is a good thing. Diane is angry and says she wants to go to Ghana to bring Ric back.

Jess heads off to her antenatal class with Zubin. She is concerned about his commitment when he is called away during the class. She gets talking to another pregnant woman, Claire. She is determined to have a home birth and remembers Zubin in attendance at her previous birth where she lost her baby. Claire unexpectently goes into labour, Zubin is forced to deliver her baby in the corridor. Later, Zubin gives Jess the keys to his house, asking her to move in with him. Jess talks to Diane and tells her that Ric would have been pleased about her getting his office. She is clearly missing her father a great deal.

Donna says she has been up all night preparing for her job interview – as the Keller staff are being downsized everyone has to reapply for their jobs. Mark decides he would like some stability and decides to go for an interview too. Donna gives a really good interview and Lisa is impressed. Mark struggles and gives a poor performance. Lisa tells Mark she is giving him a job based on his experience, not his interview technique. However Donna is not so lucky and Lisa tells her that although she was really impressed with her interview, other candidates had more experience so she will not be getting a job on Keller. She says Donna is welcome to go for agency work or apply for other jobs at Holby.
