It’s new boy PC Jake Loughton’s first shift at Holby South but his first day at the precinct isn’t running as smoothly as he’d hoped. Lucy is in charge of helping him settle in but she is finding it difficult to be paired with someone so soon after Robert’s death. As Lucy tries to make friends with her new colleague she becomes increasingly annoyed when he insists on patronising her. Their focus is quickly brought back on the job when they’re caught up in a case investigating two robbers on a smash-and-grab spree.
Back at the station, a rowdy group of drunken women is brought in after their night on the town ended in a brawl.PC William Jackson is embarrassed to discover that his estranged mother, Linda, is amongst the gang.
Meanwhile, keen to secure time away from the stresses of her job and family, Jenny joins John’s wife, Kate, and Luke’s wife, Mandy, on a girls’ night out. The girls are surprised to see Scott arrive at the bar after what turned out to be a disastrous blind date. Mandy and a heavily pregnant Jenny decide to call it a night, leaving Kate alone with Scott. Against her better judgement, she stays for another drink.
Following his declaration of love, Neil has an awkward start to the evening’s shift with Kelly. They are assigned to a long evening’s stake out, which doesn’t make the frosty atmosphere any better. Neil doesn’t regret admitting his feelings for his colleague but, when Kelly finally opens up, he’s far from prepared for her honest admission.
