Episode Summary
After getting too involved in the Burrows’s domestic abuse case, John wants to exorcise his demons once and for all. He visits his estranged father, who is currently serving time for murder.
Realising his visit was pointless, John decides to close the door on his sadistic father once and for all. However, John Snr knows exactly which buttons to press to rile his son and is unable to let him leave without having his say. Before John can escape his grubby clutches for good, his father drops a bombshell that will change John’s marriage for ever: he flaunts a letter and pictures of his children and wife Kate, which she naively sent in the vain hope of a reconciliation.
An angry and betrayed John drives home to Kate and starts a row that sends him on a downward spiral of self-destruction. In the heat of the moment John raises his fist to Kate, an action that shocks and sickens them both. The normally by-the-book DS Luke French uses uncharacteristic tactics in the ongoing Burrows case. He tries to encourage battered wife Judy Burrows to admit to the violence she has suffered at the hands of her husband, and that her son attacked his father because he was provoked. However, even though her husband is ill in hospital, Judy is still scared to go against him even though it will bring 14 years of hell to an end.
Meanwhile, back at the station, after a day of endless teasing and questioning from his colleague, PC Kelly Cooper, PC Neil Parker finally reveals the identity of his secret love. But Kelly is taken aback when she hears Neil’s surprising revelation.
